Innovative research on agricultural biowaste derived Carbon Quantum Dots for Rare Earth Elements Detection

The Research group of Dr. Ardhendu Sekhar Giri, Department of Chemical Engineering developed highly fluorescent active Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs), news clips published in ‘Times of India' on 13th May-2026).. In this work, the Corn Husk bio-waste has been converted into Carbonaceous nanomaterials which are capable of detecting REEs indicating a promising step towards the environmental monitoring. The developed CQDs were used to detect lanthanum (La3+), which plays an important role in modern technologies and widely used in electronic and optical devices, catalysts and rechargeable batteries. Dr. Giri and his research group are still continuing this work to investigate the presence of other rare earth elements (REEs) across different regions of Madhya Pradesh regions that contributes to the regional resource mapping, environmental safety and strategic use of the materials to support future technological and industrial development in the state.
