Admission

The process of admissions in all IISERs is managed by the Joint Admissions Committee (JAC), headed by a Chairman and having members from all IISERs. The details regarding admissions in all IISERs can be obtained at www.iiseradmission.in

Channels of Admission

Students are admitted to the programme through the following channels:

  • Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Basic Science Stream: Candidates having a valid KVPY fellowship are eligible to apply for admissions. Additional cut off criteria may be applicable.

  • Joint Entrance Exam (Advanced): Candidates in General category securing a rank within 10000 in the Common Rank List (CRL) of JEE Advanced are eligible to apply. For candidates belonging to reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PD), their category rank would be used. Additional cut off criteria may be applicable.

  • State and Central Boards: Students who have passed (10+2) level with science stream during the current or previous year with marks equal or above the cut off percentage in their respective boards are eligible to apply.

  • Indian nationals and students belonging to PIO or OCI category are eligible to apply provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria described above.

Scholarship

KVPY scholars admitted to IISERs would draw fellowship as per KVPY norms. In addition, a limited number of INSPIRE scholarships will be available for candidates admitted through JEE Advanced and SCB channels as per the norms prescribed by DST INSPIRE scheme.

Reservation

IISERs follow Government of India rules regarding reservation for seat allocation in Central institutes of higher education.

Bachelor of Science (BS)

Admission

IISER Bhopal offers four years BS Programme for bright and motivated science students who have passed (10+2) with Mathematics as one of the subjects. The programme integrates classroom learning with research. The training during the programme enables students to pursue careers in academia, industry or government organizations.
BS Programme is offered in two broad streams

Engineering Sciences Disciplines

After completing a common curriculum in the first two years, students can choose from one amongst the three Major disciplines currently being offered:


The courses in the above disciplines are designed to enable students to pursue careers in the industry, academia, or government organizations.

Humanities and Social Science discipline (Economic Sciences)

The first year of the programme consists of core courses in basic sciences and introductory courses in Economics. The next three years are dedicated to specialization in Economic Sciences.

The students pursuing the BS Programme can also earn a ‘minor’ degree in other disciplines after fulfilling the prerequisites laid down by the respective department. After spending four years in the BS programme, students have the option to obtain BS-MS (Dual Degree) by spending an additional year devoted to courses and research thesis.

Admission to the M.Sc. programme will be made once a year during July/August. Advertisement would be floated between March/April.

Essential Qualification

    Candidates who have passed their graduate examination in the preceding year or appearing in the final year examination of their Bachelor’s Degree can apply.

Subject Areas


  • Starting from the academic year 2022-23, IISER Bhopal is offering a 2-year Master's program in Biotechnology to eligible Bachelor's degree holders aspiring to achieve a strong foundation in research and analytical skills in core areas of Biotechnology. This program aims to broaden understanding of the interplay between microbial processes andthe molecular basis of functioning of living organisms and biosystems. These two years'Master's degree programs consist of foundational, advanced, elective courses and research projects mentored by our faculty members. The program is designed to empower students with modern techniques for research, preparing them to lead an independent carrier in both industry and academia.

Course structure:

Students are also expected to complete rigorous laboratory practical courses and interdisciplinary courses from a discipline like Humanities to improve scientific communication skills. The final semester will be dedicated to research project work.


Selection Procedure

  • Selection of applicants for admission to the M.Sc. programme will be based on a written test and/or oral interview of the short-listed candidates.

Eligibility

  • Minimum Qualification

    • Bachelor's degree (3/4/5 years) in any relevant area of Biology/Biotechnology /Agriculture/Veterinary/Pharmacy/Fishery Science/ MBBS/BDS and equivalent degree in similar or allied discipline with any biology subject.
    • GEN/OBC/EWS: Minimum of 60% marks OR a CGPA of 7.0 on a 10 point scale in the last qualifying examination.
    • A relaxation of 5% of marks will be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PD categories.
    • Marks / CGPA will be admissible as per the degree awarding institute and will not be interchangeable. If both are awarded by the degree awarding institute, the higher one will be considered.
    • Admission to reserved category candidates will be as per the Government of India rules.
    • Non-submission of eligibility proof latest by the time of admission will disqualify the candidate from getting the admission.

  • The Department of Chemistry at IISER Bhopal is glad to introduce a Masters program (M.Sc. in Chemistry) starting 2022-23 academic year. This opens up the opportunity for Bachelor of Science degree students to experience the integrated learning of Chemistry and its application in research and development. The program is focused towards preparing the next generation of scientists spanning the wide spectrum of Chemistry skilled with fundamental understanding and hands-on experience. Integrated PhD

IISER Bhopal offers Integrated PhD programme in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for bright and motivated students who have received their Bachelor’s degree. The programme is aimed to provide young motivated individuals with a rigorous training, desired level of scientific understanding, and a glimpse of global contemporary research at an early stage to enable them to pursue a career in science education and research. After successful completion of the coursework based on the advanced professional courses, students may continue with the state-of-the-art research which leads to the PhD degree. However, the students, who do not intend to carrying out their PhD degree, can exit the programme with an MS Degree after the successful completion of the course work
Admission to the Integrated PhD programme will be made once a year during May/June. Advertisement would be floated between March/April.

Fellowship

Minimum Qualification

    • M.Sc./M.Tech. or equivalent degree in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10 point scale (overall percentage/CGPA/CPI; not just in the majoring subject). Students with M.Sc./M.Tech. or equivalent degree in a branch of Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics can also apply provided they have an aptitude for research in Biological Sciences

      If the transcript/grade sheet issued by the Institute/University reports:

      • Only marks: percentage will be considered
      • Only grades: CGPA/CPI will be considered. If CGPA/CPI is reported on any scale other than 10 (eg. 4 point/ 8 point scale), an equivalent CGPA/CPI will be calculated as per the following formula: CGPA/CPI in a 10 point scale = (CGPA/CPI Obtained×10)/PS PS = Point scale used by the Institute/University.
      • Both marks and CGPA/CPI: Percentage equivalent of CGPA/CPI, as indicated on the transcript/gradesheet, will be considered. The conversion factor must be available in the transcript/grade sheet.

    • Exceptionally brilliant candidates with B.Tech./MBBS/MCA can also apply for the PhD program in Biological Sciences.
    • Additionally, a National level examination such as GATE / CSIR-UGC-JRF / DBT-JRF (category I only) / ICMR-JRF (category A only) / CSIR-UGC-LS / Provisional letter of INSPIRE-JRF for PhD / Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship or any other recognized score is mandatory. The certificate/fellowship MUST be valid at the time of admission.

      Please note that the National level examination is exempt for those with B.Tech. from IITs or BS-MS from IISERs with CGPA/CPI more than 8.0 on a 10 point scale.

Selection Procedure

  • The selection procedure for admission to the PhD programme will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interviews which will be conducted in two rounds (Rounds I and II). Candidates shortlisted from Round I, will have the option to interact with faculty members in the department following which Round II of the interviews will be conducted for the final selection. During the interviews, the candidate will be evaluated for their conceptual knowledge and the research aptitude in the field of Biological sciences.

    TA will be paid to SC/ST/PD candidates appearing for the interview as per Govt. of India norms.

  • Ph.D. students at IISER Bhopal are involved in quality research that matches the global standard. The program involves rigorous course work and research works. Besides the mandatory requirements, students are encouraged to participate in several professional activities such as workshops, review meetings, and conferences. All doctoral students are also expected to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme of the Institute as a part of their training.

      • 10+2 in Science with 60% and UG in Engineering with 60% and PG in relevant Engineering Subject with 60%.
    • Education Qualification for Ph.D. in Economic Sciences:
      • 10+2 in Science with 60% and UG in Economic Sciences with 60% and PG in Economic Sciences with 60%.
    • Education Qualification for Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences:
      • 10+2 in Science with 60% and UG in Arts with 60% and PG in relevant Humanities Subject with 60%.

  1. Minimum 60% marks/ equivalent grades in 10+2 or equivalent.

AND

  1. Four-year Bachelors’ degree or five-year integrated degree or Master’s degree in respective subject with minimum 60% score or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale at both, Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.

AND

  1. 280 score in GRE general test or valid GATE score or any Indian national examinations relevant to the subject of admission to Ph.D.

AND

  1. 60 score in TOEFL/ 6 in IELTS or any other certificate on English proficiency

AND

  1. Selection through online interviews

Preferably not more than 28 years on the date of application (as per passport)

Any additional criteria as per respective Departments from time to time. The criteria are subjected to revision based on Departmental guidelines :-
