Bachelor of Science - Master of Science (BS-MS)

  • The five year BS-MS (Dual Degree) Programme is offered in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. All BS-MS students are eligible for either Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) or Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) scholarship. Students are admitted to the programme through the following channels:

  • Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Basic Science Stream: Candidates having a valid KVPY fellowship commencing from 2017-18 academic session are eligible to apply for admissions. Additional cut off criteria may be applicable.
  • Joint Entrance Exam (Advanced): Candidates in General category securing a rank within 10000 in the Common Rank List (CRL) of JEE Advanced 2017 are eligible to apply. For candidates belonging to reserved category (OBCNC, SC, ST, PD), their category rank would be used. Additional cut off criteria may be applicable.
  • State and Central Boards: Students who have passed (10+2) level with science stream in 2016 or 2017 with marks equal or above the cut off percentage in their respective boards are eligible to apply. For the candidates belonging to the Non-Creamy Layer of the Other Backward Classes (OBCNC) and Persons with Disability (PD) categories, there is a 5% relaxation. The cut-off percentage for the Scheduled Castes (SC), the Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Kashmiri Migrants (KM) candidates is 55% in (10+2) level for all boards. Students applying through SCB channel will have to appear in the IISER Aptitude Test which will be conducted at various centres across the country. To calculate your percentage of marks obtained use your board’s method.


  • Indian nationals, and students belonging to PIO or OCI category are eligible to apply provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria described below.

  • BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme consists of mandatory, common courses (core courses) for all disciplines during the first two years and discipline dependent professional courses during the remaining three years. Core courses include topics from all the four science disciplines in addition to interdisciplinary courses in earth and environmental sciences, computer science and humanities. During the final year BS-MS students are required to undertake project work with a faculty supervisor, relevant to their major discipline.

    In addition to majoring in one of the seven (Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics) science disciplines, BS-MS students can also minor in another discipline by obtaining 24 or more credits in professional courses (III year of study onwards) along with other department specific additional requirements, as applicable, other than his/her parent discipline.     The Institute encourages and rewards academic excellence exhibited by its students. To this end, Professor C.N.R. Rao Education Foundation Prize with a prize amount of Rs. 5000/- per semester is awarded to a student scoring the highest CPI during the first year (in both the first and second semesters) of the BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme.

    In addition, the Institute awards the President's Gold Medal for the best academic performance in the graduating class in all disciplines of the BS-MS program. Proficiency Medals are the awarded for the best academic performance in the each discipline of the BS-MS program to the graduating class. A Director's Gold Medal is awarded for outstanding all-round achievement and leadership in the graduating class in all disciplines.

Integrated Doctoral Programme (Integrated PhD)

  • The Institute offers Integrated PhD programme in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. A prospective candidate should have completed a graduate programme (B.Sc./B.Tech./B.E.) in a discipline relevant to his/her choice of Integrated PhD programme. Candidates seeking admission in Chemistry should have a valid JAM score.

    All admitted students will receive a fellowship of Rs. 10,000/- per month. Subsequently, upon successful completion of PhD candidacy requirements, a revised fellowship will be provided as per MHRD norms/guidelines.

    IISER Bhopal is well equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities matching global standards in all disciplines to facilitate quality research. students must successfully complete course work, qualifying examination, seminars, and a dissertation. Besides the mandatory requirements, students are encourages to participate in several professional activities such as workshops, review meetings and conferences.

Doctoral Programme (PhD)

  • The Institute offers PhD programmes in five disciplines. A prospective candidate should have completed a postgraduate programme (M.S./M.Sc./M.Tech./MBBS) in a discipline relevant to his/her choice of PhD programme along with qualifying a national entrance exam. Students should have a valid rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and/or have qualified the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)/University Grants Commission (UGC)/National Eligibility Test – Junior Research Fellowship (NET-JRF), or other equivalent examinations. All selected candidates not receiving external fellowship will be awarded an Institute fellowship. Currently, the Institute offers PhD programmes in the following disciplines:

  • IISER Bhopal is well equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities matching global standards in all disciplines to facilitate quality research. Doctoral students must successfully complete course work, qualifying examination, seminars, and a dissertation. Post Doctoral Fellowship

BS-MS Dual Degree Programme

  • It is a five year dual degree programme for bright and motivated science students who have passed class XII. The programme integrates classroom learning with research and provides ample scope for multidisciplinary interactions. The first two years of the programme consist of core courses in basic sciences, the third and fourth years are dedicated to specialization in chosen science subjects and the fifth year includes a research project. The training during the programme enables students to pursue a career in academia, R&D institutes and science based industries.

    Currently, IISER Bhopal offers BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme in Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics.

    Students choosing to ‘major’ in Engineering Sciences (Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science) will be restricted on the basis of Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) to a maximum of 30 in each Department, and a total maximum of 50 across the two Departments.

Eligibility

  • Students will be admitted to the Five Year BS-MS Dual Degree programme beginning August 2014 through the following channels

Scholarship

  • KVPY scholars admitted to IISERs would draw fellowship as per KVPY norms. In addition, a limited number of INSPIRE scholarships will be available for candidates admitted through JEE Advanced and SCB channel as per the norms prescribed by DST INSPIRE scheme.


Reservation

Integrated PhD

  • IISER Bhopal offers Integrated PhD programme in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics for bright and motivated students who have received their Bachelor’s degree. The programme is aimed to provide young motivated individuals with a rigorous training, desired level of scientific understanding, and a glimpse of global contemporary research at an early stage to enable them to pursue a career in science education and research. After successful completion of the coursework based on the advanced professional courses, students may continue with the state-of-the-art research which leads to the PhD degree. However, the students, who do not intend to carrying out their PhD degree, can exit the programme with an MS Degree after the successful completion of the course work

    Admission to the Integrated PhD programme will be made once a year during May/June. Advertisement would be floated between March/April.

Reservation

  • Seats will be reserved according to the Central Government norms (i.e., 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST candidates and 27% for OBC-NCL). In addition, 3% horizontal reservation would be provided for candidates belonging to PD category.

Fellowship

  • All admitted students will receive a fellowship of Rs. 10,000/- per month till the end of the third year (subject to fulfilling the minimum CPI requirements). Subsequently, a revised fellowship will be provided as per MHRD norms/guidelines.

The certificate/fellowship MUST be valid at the time of admission.

        Students whose results for CSIR-UGC NET Fellowship or ICMR-JRF category-I or DBT-JRF A category or Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship or INSPIRE-PhD or any other equivalent fellowship are awaited can also apply with their roll number(s) mentioned in the application. Such candidates will be allowed to appear for the interview provided they have qualified examination for any of the above fellowship before the interview date. Such candidates will not be sent a call letter for the interview.     Selection Procedure

    • The selection procedure for admission to the PhD programme will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interviews which will be conducted in two rounds (Rounds I and II). Candidates shortlisted from Round I, will have the option to interact with faculty members in the department following which Round II of the interviews will be conducted for the final selection. During the interviews, the candidate will be evaluated for their conceptual knowledge and the research aptitude in the field of general and Biological sciences.

General Information For Candidates

Course Content

  • BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme consists of mandatory, common courses (core courses) for all disciplines during the first two years and discipline-dependent professional courses during the remaining three years. Core courses include topics from all disciplines (Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics) in addition to interdisciplinary courses in Humanities and Social Sciences. During the fifth year of the programme, BS-MS students are required to undertake MS thesis work with a faculty supervisor, relevant to their major discipline.

    In addition to majoring in one of the seven disciplines, BS-MS students can also minor in another discipline by fulfilling criteria specified by individual departments. The criteria for successfully completing the BS-MS programme in various disciplines are documented in the BS-MS Programme Manual.

    Integrated PhD programme consists of course work, project work, qualifying/comprehensive examination, seminars, and a thesis. Integrated PhD students from all disciplines will have to register for a minimum of 48 course credits and a minimum of 40 research credits. In order to graduate, they should have a total minimum of 128 credits.

    PhD programme consists of course work, qualifying/comprehensive examination, seminars, and a thesis. PhD students from all disciplines will have to register for a minimum course credits as specified by their parent department and a minimum of 40 research credits. In order to graduate, they should have a total minimum of 96 credits.

    Besides the mandatory requirements, students are encouraged to participate in several professional activities such as workshops, review meetings and conferences. All doctoral students are also expected to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme of the Institute as a part of their training.
